Mathematics
At Dosthill Primary Academy, our mission in Mathematics is to ensure that every child develops a clear understanding of numbers, with a strong emphasis on achieving fluency in number facts. We focus on mental strategies, reasoning, and problem-solving, encouraging pupils to apply their mathematical knowledge to real-world situations.
We implement the White Rose Maths scheme, which guides pupils' progression from using concrete objects to pictorial representations and abstract concepts. Our pupils are encouraged to use precise mathematical vocabulary and articulate their thinking through sentence stems, fostering effective communication and reasoning skills. Teachers also provide opportunities for children to apply their mathematical knowledge across other subjects, ensuring a deeper understanding.
Our approach to Mathematics aligns closely with the Discovery Curriculum, where key threads such as Challenge, Curiosity, and Expertise are integrated. We aim to make Mathematics an engaging and enjoyable subject, tailored to meet the diverse needs of our learners. By fostering a growth mindset, we encourage children to embrace challenges and see mistakes as learning opportunities. Pupils develop a secure understanding of mental and written strategies for all four operations - addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division - building confidence and competence as mathematicians ready to explore and discover.
