British Values
At Dosthill Primary Academy, we are committed to promoting the fundamental British values of Democracy, Individual Liberty, The Rule of Law, and Mutual Respect and Tolerance. These values are an integral part of our school’s ethos, and they are actively taught and reinforced throughout our curriculum, school assemblies, and daily interactions. We aim to prepare our pupils for life in modern Britain by fostering an inclusive, respectful community that celebrates diversity and encourages responsible citizenship.
Democracy
At Dosthill, we value pupil voice and ensure that every child has the opportunity to contribute to the decision-making process. Our School Council provides pupils with the chance to represent their peers and influence positive changes within the school. Elections for these groups are held, teaching children about the democratic process and encouraging them to understand the importance of participation, fairness, and accountability.
Individual Liberty
We believe in nurturing a school environment where children feel safe, confident, and empowered to make their own choices. Through our curriculum and pastoral care, we help pupils understand their rights and responsibilities, encouraging them to express their views and opinions while respecting those of others. Children are taught about the importance of personal freedom within the context of a supportive and structured environment.
The Rule of Law
Understanding the rule of law is a fundamental part of life at Dosthill Primary Academy. We teach children the reasons behind rules and laws, how they govern and protect us, and the consequences of breaking them. Our behaviour policy, school values, and classroom expectations all promote a clear understanding of fairness, justice, and the importance of following rules. External visitors, such as the police and community leaders, regularly engage with the children to deepen their understanding of the law and its role in our society.
Mutual Respect and Tolerance
At Dosthill, mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths, beliefs, and cultures are deeply embedded in our ethos. We embrace the diversity within our school community and beyond, encouraging children to be respectful, empathetic, and open-minded. Through assemblies, PSHE lessons, and celebrations of cultural and religious festivals, pupils learn about the importance of treating everyone with kindness and respect. Our global approach to learning ensures that children understand and appreciate the world from multiple perspectives.
Embedding British Values in Our Curriculum
We actively promote British values throughout our Discovery Curriculum. Our cross-curricular approach ensures that pupils’ spiritual, moral, social, and cultural (SMSC) development is embedded in their everyday learning experiences. Whether through historical studies, discussions about governance, or exploring moral dilemmas in PSHE lessons, children gain a deeper understanding of how British values shape our society and their role in contributing to it.
Celebrating British Values at Dosthill Primary Academy
We continuously reinforce British values through school assemblies, community events, and classroom activities. We encourage our pupils to live out these values in their everyday interactions, becoming respectful and responsible members of both our school community and the wider world.
At Dosthill Primary Academy, we believe that by embedding these values into everything we do, we are helping to prepare our pupils not just for success in school, but for their future roles in society.
